Garnhart speeds to QCJeeps.com Modified special checkers
Nezworski, Waterman, Gill, Wauters, Marshall also collect Maquoketa Speedway wins

By ROB HINCKLEY
MAQUOKETA, IA (May 19) – Orange-shaded lightning in the far distance past the backstretch of Maquoketa Speedway provided the perfect back drop for a storm of racing Saturday evening.
The thunder known as Bryce Garnhart kept rolling. He sped to the QCJeeps.com IMCA Modified 35-lap special feature win and cashed the $1,000 check that went with it.
The victory was the Shannon, Ill. ace’s fourth straight to start the 2018 season at the Jackson County Fairgrounds speed plant. He held off a hard charging Ray Cox, Jr., who was racing the top groove from deep in the field.
“I knew he was coming,” Garnhart said. “I searched around there at one point with lapped traffic coming. I was like ‘the top ain’t too bad so I might run up there.’ It’s hard to give up the bottom when you got the lead.”
Garnhart won his heat, picked number one on the redraw and led every lap.
“We’ve just been plugging away. The crew’s been awesome. I had to work all morning, but Dad, Fly, Skyler and Josh all washed the car and fixed the damage from last night (from Davenport). So it’s been great.”
The Baldauf Farms/Musser Crop Service machine was a rocket through lapped traffic about midway in the event.
“Someone told me when there’s lapped traffic here you gotta go and you can’t wait around. So that’s what stuck in my head and just keep on going.”
Cox, Tyler Madigan, Zach Less and David Brown rounded out the top five. Less came from 21st in the 26-car field.
Sponsors donated and the cars came for the Ueland Auto IMCA Stock Cars. A season high 19 were in the field, including Muscatine’s Greg Gill.
He fought off Timmy Current, Donnie Louck and a charging Todd Reisler to take home the $950 top prize in the 15-lap main.
Jeff Struck, Jr. completed the top five.
David Brandies passed Terry Dulin for the top spot early, but had to go pitside with a broken left front suspension. Dulin led again, but spun and recovered for eighth.
Andy Nezworski was patient and then put the late move on track champion Matt Ryan to win the Andover Meat IMCA Late Model 25-lap feature.
Jeremiah Hurst also got by Ryan. Joe Zrostlik and Chad Holladay followed.
Jared Waterman said before the evening he wanted his luck to change. It did in the B&D Pit Stop IMCA Sport Mods.
The Coyne Center, Ill. driver swept his heat and the 15-lap finale. He swiped the lead from Joe Grant with six laps to go and ran to the win.
Gage Neal also got by Grant using the high groove. Jake Ellithorpe and Jarrett Franzen were next.
Daniel Wauters creeped around the high and low grooves and launched to the 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stock win.
Lane Vohringer, Bobby Taggart, Shane Oberbreckling and Kile Vohringer followed.
It is two straight for Brett Marshall in the Obie’s Bar and Restaurant/B&C Liquor 4 Cylinders. Marshall copped the 12-lap feature ahead of Tyler Shady, Dillon Embree, Nick Proehl and Justin Hempstead.
A total of 107 race teams filled the pits and the final checkered flag fell just after 10 p.m.
Action continues this Saturday May 26 with Memorial Day Weekend Salute to Sailors and Soldiers Night.
Point battles in take place in all regular classes - Andover Meat IMCA Late Models, QCJeeps.com IMCA Modifieds, B&D Pit Stop IMCA SportMods, Ueland Auto IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks and Obie’s Bar and Restaurant/B&D Liquors 4 Cylinders. The Mod Lites return for the second 2018 visit.
