Current finds victory lane at Maquoketa,
Neal, Garnhart, Miles, Wroten, Ellithorpe, Hayes also pick up checkers

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (July 14) – The crowd probably could feel Timmy Current’s sigh of relief as he exited turn four.

Current crossed by the checkered flag first and won the 15-lap Ueland Auto IMCA Stock Car feature Saturday evening at Maquoketa Speedway.

“This was a long time coming,” Current said and then laughed. “I had to use a GPS to find victory lane.”

Current, of Bernard, had come close several times in three different racing classes, including leading two features in the same night earlier in the season. Both came to an end early with mechanical issues.

This night he would not be denied.

“Winning here is great. The track was really racy. I was able to run low and glad (car owner) Scott Fjelstul lets me drive this thing.”

Last week’s winner Greg Gill dispatched traffic and tried to close on Current, but the veteran pulled away and got the proverbial monkey off his back.

Joe Bonney, Independence visitor Justin Temeyer and Donnie Louck rounded out the top five.

Terry Neal leads the IMCA Deery Brothers Late Model Series in career wins at Maquoketa. That winning way had not carried over to 2018 yet in the Andover Meat IMCA Late Models. That changed Saturday as he swept to the high groove and raced to the 25-lap win.

Neal charged after a late restart from fifth to second and passed Joe Zrostlik for the victory. Jeremiah Hurst, Andy Nezworski and Jeff Tharp followed. Tharp came back through the field after restarting in the rear following a caution.

Bryce Garnhart opened the season with three wins and a third. The Shannon, Ill. ace had struggled some since then until Saturday.

Garnhart swept the QCJeeps.com IMCA Modified show, winning his heat and the 20-lap feature. He rolled off fifth in the 19-car field and only drove forward, holding off a charging Justin Kay. July 7 winner Kory Meyer, point leader Tyler Madigan and Nick Marolf came next.

Jerry Miles is another driver that flirted with victory earlier in the season. This was his night as he passed Gage Neal and cruised to the B&D Pit Stop IMCA SportMod 15-lap main win.

Neal took over the point lead solo by taking second, ahead of Logan Veloz, Justin Veloz and Keith Blum. Drivers had to earn their finish as the average start position of the top five was P6. Blum had the deepest start in the field at 11th.

Twenty five SportMods were on hand.

With Independence Speedway rained out, Leah Wroten made the trip again to Maquoketa and pulled off her third victory at the track. She raced from ninth starting position to the front and beat Randy Byerly, early leader Scott Michaelis, Bobby Taggart and Shane Oberbreckling.

A season high 19 Obie’s Bar and Restaurant/B&C Liquors 4 Cylinders hit the 3/8-mile, high-banked dirt oval and put on a show.

Jake Ellithorpe made his class debut after his SportMod ride and shot by nearly race long leader Mitch Bielenberg at the checkered flag. Steve Struck, Brett Marshall and Josh Lane followed in the 12-lap finale.

Owen Hayes made a late pass to win the Junkies feature over Steve Sheppors.

This race was red flagged right after the start when Nick McCrady rolled his 1978 Olds Cutlass Hatchback in turn one. He exited the vehicle on his own, but was transported to the hospital for observation and released.

The scheduled Powder Puff races were postponed as the city ordinance curfew was imminent. Those are rescheduled for this Saturday July 21.

Another season high total of 116 race teams jammed the pits and a total of 23 races took the green flag.

Action continues this Saturday July 21 presented by QCJeeps.com. Racing takes place in all regular classes – Andover Meat IMCA Late Models, QCJeeps.com IMCA Modifieds, B&D Pit Stop IMCA SportMods, Ueland Auto IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks and Obie’s Bar and Restaurant/B&D Liquors 4 Cylinders. Again, the Powder Puff races are reset.

Following Saturday will be the annual Jackson County Fair Championship Races Thursday July 26 before two weeks off, returning Aug. 11.

Gates open Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps are 6:15 with racing to follow.
